Test Mercedes G400d: Almost two years delivery time

Mercedes really hit a nerve when they launched a brand new generation Geländewagen, or G-Class, back in 2018.

The iconic model got a solid boost, not lost on the inside with a brand new and modern interior.

At the same time, Mercedes chose to keep the legendary safe design on the outside. The car immediately became a great success. Not only in Norway, but all over the world.

The result was long waiting lists and even more startling: The majority at home in Norway chose to buy the top model, AMG G63 with V8 engine and 585 hp. As many as 8/10 customers chose the worst.

Nearly two years waiting time

Today, three years after its launch, the progress is still great. If you order a new G-Class now, you will not receive the car until January 2023 at the earliest. We are therefore talking about a one and a half to two-year waiting period, regardless of driveline.

Broom has previously driven new G-Class both with the smallest diesel engine (G350d), as well as the worst from AMG.

Now the time has come for the diesel flagship, named 400d.

NB: This is a card test. This means that we have tested this model before. Now we try it with a new driveline. You will find a more thorough test of the G-Class her:

What is new?

In the G400d, Mercedes has placed its most powerful diesel engine. The recipe is six cylinders in a row – of a total of 3 liters. The power output is 330 hp and a whopping 700 Nm. The latter is as much as we find in the supercar AMG GT R.

Now we are also testing the car as a five-seater, which means a solid price jump compared to the van version, which many Norwegians choose.

The price you have to pay for the back seats is pretty wild. We are talking just over 500,000 kroner. While the starting price of the G400d van is NOK 1,591,900, the same car starts with rear seats of NOK 2,107,900.

It costs to be a guy, but it costs even more to be a family man …

With the G400d, you do not necessarily need roads to get to the top of Hafjell.

How does it work?

Driving a G-Class always offers its own and special experience. Just climbing into the car and closing the heavy doors with a bang gives something extra.

You sit high and look at the huge hood through the narrow windshield. In that sense, it is almost like driving an old truck.

It actually supports some of the steering feel as well. The G400d is relatively heavy on the steering wheel and it requires a little steering angle. At the same time, there is no doubt that the new G-Class has become far better and more precise to drive now, compared to its predecessor.

The interior combines the classic look with modern solutions.

Fabulous engine

The engine in the 400d is simple and straightforward, and one of the best diesel engines ever made. The row seeker paints quietly and calmly. In addition, it offers a power package of the rare.

With 330 hp and 700 Nm, already from 1,200 rpm, you never miss more power. This despite the fact that the car weighs almost 2.5 tons.

Consumption during the test period is around 1 liter per mile. Considering the engine power, the weight of the car and the aerodynamic properties, which are in line with a dishwasher, this is definitely inside.

Luxury and plenty of space

With the G-Class as a five-seater, you really get a family SUV out of the ordinary. The space in the back seats is good, and not least the height up to the ceiling.

Even Sultan Kösen (the world’s tallest man according to the Guinness Book of Records) gets enough space here.

In contrast to the previous generation G-Class, the feeling of luxury is very good inside. This combined with the practical features, is another combination many like on the new G.

During the test period, we also get to test the luggage compartment properly, when we go to Hafjell with two downhill bikes and luggage. The luggage compartment is huge and stated to be 667 liters. If you fold down the rear seats, you can carry a full 1,941 liters.

We must admit that it was tempting to drop the lift pass in Hafjell, and instead drive the G-Class up the mountain sides. It would clearly be just fine, because this is really a capable off-road machine!

Conclusion

If you are going to buy a new car in 2021, there are few cars that are close to delivering a similar experience as the G-Class.

Seen from the outside, it is like going back many years in time. It’s nostalgic.

If you open the doors and sit down, you suddenly fall right into 2021 – with a modern and stylish interior. At the same time, the DNA of the old G-Class is taken care of, with the handle on the passenger side, the buttons for the differential locks and not least the sound when you lock the doors. It sounds like a stock market shot.

The G-Class has simply become a modern legend. From this point of view, we understand well that there is a one and a half to two year waiting time for the car.

Besides the price tag, the biggest downside to the G-Class is that the entire model is unfortunately threatened with extinction with petrol or diesel-drinking engines. The positive thing is that today’s cars are so solid that they are difficult to crack.
