Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown: Gameplay Preview Impressions and Multiplayer Features

Although we in the editorial office are looking forward to Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, we could hardly hide our skepticism. The title, which is being worked on by developers from the Kylotonn studio, was hidden from players for a long time, and when the first gameplay preview came after the meaningless teasers, we watched crazy cooperation accompanied by all kinds of shouts, cheers and slightly convulsive efforts to compete. To make matters worse, the footage posted as part of the Nacon Connect broadcast was not smooth, and the comments were filled with astonishment. Also, fans often mentioned that it almost seems as if the developers forgot about the important aspect of driving smoothly through the detailed environment and had no choice but to wait for the next demo. It finally arrived at the end of last week and it must be acknowledged that it made a much more positive impression on long-time TDU fans.

The video is almost four minutes long and offers a look at playing alone. It all starts with the purchase of a car – specifically, the 2008 Alfa Romeo 8C Spider – followed by the choice of color, interior or wheels, and then just turn on the radio, roll down the window and hit the streets of Hong Kong. Although the game is still not 100% smooth in the footage, for most of the time driving through the city is smooth and feels really good. Graphically, Solar Crown is not at its best – especially in competition with upcoming titles such as The Crew Motorfest or Forza Motorsport – but the game cannot be denied a great atmosphere and the ability to wander aimlessly. At the same time, the city itself is processed on a 1:1 scale, so just like Hawaii or Ibiza before, Hong Kong promises a great experience presented by Solar Crown.

The developers also presented the dynamic change of time of day and the change of atmosphere that the game brings, which also gives a satisfying impression and becomes the reason why want in the Solar Crown to ride. And as is usually the case with games, when it starts to rain, puddles appear on the road and lights or illuminated signs are reflected in them, everything looks a little better. The result, filmed in the alpha version, is really liked by the players and it seems as if the mood around the title has improved significantly. The developers then also published a comprehensive blog on the game’s official website, in which they do not reflect the new video in any way. On the contrary, it refers only to the test that took place, and there was also an explanation as to why the very first sample from the game had the form described.

According to the developers, playing in multiplayer – whether together or against each other – is to be the main way players will approach Solar Crown, and it was said to be key to involve prominent members of the community in the video. It is said that important feedback also comes from them, thanks to which the new Test Drive should take shape and finally start to resemble the game that the fans are looking forward to. At this point, however, it is still advisable not to get ahead of yourself and wait to see how Solar Crown will actually play out. The developers indicate that there should be another test, but still the game does not have a fixed release date.
