Tesla seems to be getting closer to Malaysia. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to meet Tesla CEO Elon Musk next week.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is scheduled to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim next week. The meeting was reportedly held to discuss investment developments in Malaysia. It is hoped that this investment will open up new jobs in the neighboring country.
“Elon Musk asked to meet next week to discuss the possibility of increasing investment in Malaysia,” said Anwar, as reported by local media, The Star.
Previously, Minister of International Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz said that his party had accepted Tesla’s proposal to import electric cars from Uncle Sam’s country to Malaysia. Tesla, said Zafrul, will build an office in Malaysia, introduce an ‘experience center’, build an after-sales network, and build a ‘Supercharger’ station.
Tesla’s presence in Malaysia is also believed to be able to increase the ability of workers in the electric car segment. Not only that, it is also hoped that local companies can supply components to Tesla both domestically and globally.
Regarding this, Elon Musk has not opened his voice at all. Meanwhile, Zafrul leaked that Tesla’s entry into Malaysia was facilitated by MITI through the BEV Global Leaders initiative. Tesla is the first brand to join this program.
How in Indonesia?
Apart from Malaysia, Tesla is also said to be ‘closer’ to Indonesia. The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said Tesla was one of the manufacturers interested in investing in the country. However, until now there has been no further news regarding Tesla’s plans to enter Indonesia. Regarding Tesla’s plan to build an office and showroom in Malaysia, Luhut said it meant nothing. Even so, Luhut did not explain in more detail regarding Tesla’s plans in Indonesia.
“With Tesla, we are still bound by NDA. But I can only tell you, Mexico is America’s backyard, so of course they are building there. If in this region they still have commitments, what I know-I heard is that approximately one million cars. Will they go to Indonesia later? Yes, we’ll see in the next few days,” Luhut said in March 2023.
