Tesla, which is managed by Elon Musk, has been testing its FSD Beta system for some time. Until recently, testing of the autonomous driving system has been severely restricted. The producer boasted that there was no accident during that time. As you can see a bit prematurely.
Tesla driver complains to NHTSA. Elon Musk released an underdeveloped product?
According to Electrec, the owner of Tesla Model Y has filed a complaint against Tesla, which is managed by Elon Musk. This is the first time the company has updated its Full Self-Driving Beta system. As it turns out, the increase in the number of drivers allowed to test the full version of the system was not a good idea.
The Model Y owner of Brea, California (USA) posted the complaint on the website of the US security agency NHTSA, claiming that the system was responsible for the accident in which it was involved.
In a complaint to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the owner wrote that the accident happened while he was using the Full Self-Driving Beta. In the complaint he wrote:
The vehicle in FSD Beta mode ran into the wrong lane while making a left turn and was hit by another driver in the adjacent lane. The car gave a mid-corner warning so I tried to turn the steering wheel to avoid hitting the wrong lane, but the car took control by itself and made me enter the wrong lane in a dangerous maneuver where everyone was at risk. The car is badly damaged on the driver’s side.
It was a matter of time, as NHTSA has long been talking about
Tesla has been using a fully standalone (FSD) Beta for over a year. Last month, Elon Musk boasted that there was no accident in the test program.
Unfortunately, taking into account that until recently the program was limited mainly to employees and a few owners, it is still such an impressive result that there was no accident.
As more Tesla owners joined the extended beta program, the failure was inevitable. This may be the first failure of a Tesla electrician to use the full beta for autonomous driving.
The drivers commenting on the case revealed that, like the driver, they had such situations and had to fight the car. Therefore, a reported complaint is not necessarily a fraud. The car’s resistance is significant, and the reaction must be violent, as the driver only has a few seconds to save the day.
It is not ordinary drivers who should test Tesla autonomous systems
As he claims Electrek, this situation can be avoided- When the driver applies torque to the steering wheel, the FSD Beta is deactivated. Unfortunately, as Tesla drivers write, the combination of the wrong speed, the wrong lane selection and an approaching car can get less careful people into trouble.
Today, Elon Musk and Tesla say that both Autopilot and FSD are level 2 systems. So there is no need to obtain approval for testing. The truth is that both systems are designed to offer the driver the ability to drive autonomously, making them samples of Tier 4 systems.
Because NHTSA plans to prevent Tesla testing systems on public roads. The manufacturer may soon be doing it on the tracks, only with trained drivers and following strict rules. So do all producers.
