Unfortunately, Tesla’s entire automation system has gone completely wrong thanks to Musk who set unrealistic deadlines and expectations.
Many in the auto industry had already said that everything Tesla tried to do, namely build fully automatic cars, would not work. Not because they lacked confidence in the people at Tesla, but because every manufacturer had invested billions in it since the 1980s and it never succeeded. Nothing Tesla tried to do was unique or new, everything had already been tried by multiple manufacturers.
After Tesla almost collapsed, they turned to Toyota for help, they practically got their own version of a Toyota factory. As one of the most experienced car builders and overall manufacturers, this has helped Tesla get their numbers somewhat in order. Toyota got a boatload of stock in return, hopefully they got something out of it, but Toyota is so huge it probably doesn’t matter much.
Tesla is said to have less automation than Toyota at the moment, even though they use the same techniques. The quality delivered is also lower, with Toyota’s reliability and delivery quality (such as panel fitting, for example) being extremely good, even with their entry-level models, while Tesla has quality issues even with their most expensive cars.
Of course it is a matter of bad luck or luck, but a friend of mine takes his Tesla to the garage almost every month due to a whole series of issues. Before that he had a Jaguar and that was much worse, so a step forward in that respect, but still.
So don’t believe too much of what Musk shouts, his Tesla factories are nothing special and they don’t have a huge degree of automation, despite all attempts.
