Tesla would suffer on cars, thanks to emission credits

The American carmaker Tesla reported a profit for 2020, which is not usual for it – it was the first time in the whole year that it did not have a negative economic result. According to the American website The Motley Fool, which deals with finances and shares, this is not due to the success of its cars, but to the emission credits.

They work in such a way that the carmaker receives so-called emission credits for the sale of paper-ecological cars, such as electric cars. It must have a certain number of them to comply with the regulations, but if it has a surplus, it can resell them to other car manufacturers.

And precisely because Tesla only sells electric cars, it can sell credits to other carmakers – and thanks to that, it was profitable last year.

These credits in the US came as a pressure on automakers to sell cars with lower CO2 emissions. As a result, however, they are more of a subsidy for Tesla’s loss-making business, but a subsidy from the money of customers of other car manufacturers, not from the pockets of all taxpayers without distinction.

In 2020, Tesla sold credits worth $ 1.6 billion (34.4 billion crowns). The reported profit for last year was $ 721 million (15.5 billion crowns), which means that without credits, $ 879 million (18.9 billion crowns) would be at a loss.

For Tesla, relying on credits is not a long-term sustainable plan, because as more and more carmakers offer electrified cars and as their sales increase every year, other carmakers will need to buy less and less of these credits.
