(Elbil24): For a long time we have heard about technologies that will come in electric cars, but which we currently have the benefit of seeing on the open market for us consumers. Wireless charging of the electric cars is among these things, or induction charging, as a more professional expression of the technology.
Several manufacturers, on the other hand, have highlighted the technology as something they are considering, and there is even a trial project underway in Oslo, where a bunch of taxis charge by induction.

Now, however, it may appear that the solution can get a new kick-start, because the other day Tesla stated that they are working on developing the solution. It was in a longer conversation with the American – and car-mad – TV host Jay Leno that Tesla designer Franz von Holzhausen stated that Tesla is working on the technology. This as part of a wider context, as part of smart house solutions, where the car can charge the house, and vice versa.
This is primarily a solution in demand in those markets where they have unstable power grids, but also for enthusiasts who want to reduce their carbon footprint by going the extra green mile.
Known solution
Until today, wireless charging has been presented as a relatively flat plate that lies on the floor of the garage, which you then simply park over when you get home. The rest takes care of itself, and you start with a fully charged car the next morning.
It was at a demonstration of the Tesla Cybertruck that von Holzhausen confirmed that Tesla is working on the technology. At the same time, one of the challenges currently is to create as close a contact between the charging plate and the car as possible. This can present challenges for cars that have extra high ground clearance, such as the Cybertruck. And thus a further challenge appears.

The charging plate must therefore be constructed in such a way that it can rise up to the car. It is unrealistic to do the opposite, that every car should lower itself to the plate. This brings us back to what has kept induction charging off the market until now, namely the cost.
Expensive
For one thing, you have to buy a charging plate. Another thing is that the car must also have a receiver, and be compatible with induction charging as well. Overall, this is a cost that has not yet come down so low in price that the car manufacturers have seen it as appropriate to make it. When the charging plate must also have a raise and lower function, this drives the price up even further. Alternatively, the charging plate can be mounted at the correct height, but then it will be in the way again for lower cars.
Tesla, on the other hand, has managed to rethink many other areas, so now it remains to be seen whether they also find a way out for induction charging – or wireless charging in another way.
Franz von Holzhausen, on the other hand, did not state a time frame for when the technology would be ready, or if he even took it for granted that they would achieve it, other than to acknowledge that they were working on finding a solution for wireless charging through a charging plate that you park over.
