Tesla Battery Day is about to fall, it will take place on September 22nd. Therefore, the first speculations come to the surface.
Electrek.co magazine managed to get photos of something that is very likely new Tesla battery cell, the result of the Roadrunner project. Most of all, it resembles an old “burt”, only several times larger.
Apparently the new Tesla battery cells have twice the diameter of the existing 2170 cells used in batteries for Tesla Model Y a Tesla Model 3.
With the considered dimensions of 54 × 98 mm, this means almost four times larger volume. With improved battery chemistry, this will mean a significant increase in bulk energy density for whole batteries and substantial reduction in price due to simplification of production.
Elon Musk moreover, he has indicated earlier that these will not be the only improvements to the article. Tesla has previously patented improved / simplified electrodes.
It seems that new articles will be “tabless”, thus, they will not have individual contacts for the anode and cathode. On the contrary, the whole article will act as a contact. According to Musek, this is a relatively simple change, but it has far-reaching consequences.
