The electric car manufacturer Tesla has confirmed that at certain Supercharger charging points, which are more busy, the manufacturer will start demanding an additional payment, or the so-called “congestion fee”. This is done with the aim of discouraging users from trying to charge to 100%, instead allowing others to charge and reducing waiting times at charging facilities.
As you know, when the car has a small remaining battery, for example 20%, the car will charge faster. As you approach 100%, the charging capacity will decrease and each subsequent percentage and kilowatt-hour will load more slowly.
This fee will be $1 per minute and will automatically count from the moment the car reaches 90% charge. If you want to charge the car up to 100% at these specific charging points, you will have to pay extra, while up to 90% this fee will not be charged. When this 90% charge level is reached, the driver will be informed about it in the Tesla app, and the manufacturer emphasizes that in this way it tries to get customers to charge as much as is necessary for the trip, trying to ensure the availability of charging equipment to the widest possible range of customers.
For now, such a system is being implemented in the USA, but this does not rule out the possibility that similar solutions will be implemented in other parts of the world over time.
