Tesla will (again) increase the price of the full version of the Autopilot

Elon Musk announced on his Twitter account a further increase in the price of the Autopilot’s fully autonomous driving capability option. In the future, cars equipped with them will benefit from 100% autonomous driving functions.

If there is one ad that Tesla is honoring on time, it is that of increasing the price of the fully self-driving Capability option, which guarantees access to the next autonomous driving functions via remote updates (OTA).

Elon Musk announced last year that the price of this option would increase as the capabilities of the Autopilot approach 100% autonomous driving. As of November 1, 2019, Tesla had already increased the price of fully autonomous driving capacity by approximately $ 1,000, to reach € 6,300 in France (+ € 1,000).

The electric car maker does not intend to stop there and Elon Musk has just announced a new increase in the price of this function. As of July 1, 2020, the Autopilot’s fully autonomous driving capacity will see its price increase again by approximately $ 1,000, which could give a boost. boost on orders by this deadline.

A bet on the future

The ECO also specifies that he sees the value of the fully autonomous driving function exceed $ 100,000 “As the software gets closer to 100% autonomous driving with the approval of the regulators”. Indeed, a level 4 or 5 autonomous driving could open the Tesla to new uses. Tesla plans to launch a robotaxis service and Elon Musk had announced that the price of Tesla would then “Increase significantly, because a fully autonomous car that can function as a robotaxi has many times the value of a non-autonomous car”.

The promise of the upcoming deployment of a fully autonomous driving function may therefore justify the price of the option requested by Tesla. However, the € 6,300 currently billed in France only gives access to a handful of additional functions compared to the free version of the Autopilot, such as management of insertion lanes and motorway exits and changes to automatic tracks. In the future, this option should also be offered by subscription.
