Tesla wants to fight the monopolization of Supercharger locations by drivers Uber in New York City. An aberration ?
It’s the snake that bites its own tail. After selling thousands of Model Ys to Uber, here is Tesla get annoyed by too many drivers squatting at fast charging stations in NYC. However, they need to be recharged…
The story begins in 2023 when the town hall of the “Big Apple” issued 10,000 electric car operating permits to Uber and its competitor. Lyft in order to decarbonize its streets. These two VTC companies have largely chosen to purchase Teslas in order to respond to the enthusiasm of their customers.
These 10,000 vehicles were added to an already very developed fleet of private vehicles. And now, there is saturation in Tesla Superchargers, with customers no longer hesitating to post their annoyance towards the Californian manufacturer on social networks. Which has found no other solution than to penalize more harshly the cars that squat in locations beyond 90% recharge.
Tesla would have realized that the Ubers were “sleeping” as much as possible on the terminals between two trips, generating traffic jams in the parking lots. From now on, the “congestion tax” is set at 1 dollar per minute squatted on a terminal beyond 90% charge.
The next step will be for Uber and other ride-hailing services to develop their own charging networks in order to release Superchargers to individuals only.
