Tesla believes that 2023 will be the year in which these 4680 cells will begin to be used massively, once their production has been scaled

The recent Tesla financial results conference for the second quarter of the year has allowed us to learn some interesting data about the progress made by the American firm, as we reported a couple of days ago.
Other relevant information that should be highlighted and that came to light during this conference refers to Tesla’s production plans for its new 4680 cellswhich will be the basis for a new generation of electric vehicles from the company.
As explained by Drew Baglino, Manager of Tesla, the company’s intention is to start the production of these cells in the new Texas Gigafactory before the end of September, when the third quarter of the year ends. In this way, Baglino assures that by the end of the year the production volume of 4680 cells in Texas should already exceed that of the pilot line that is currently operational at the Fremont plant.
To date, the production of this pilot line that we mentioned produces enough cells to almost a thousand vehicles a week. A figure much lower than the current needs of the company, in the absence of new models such as the Cybertruck or the Tesla Semi reaching the market.
In 2023 the 4680 cells will gradually reach more models of the manufacturer
The equipment necessary to start mass production of the 4680 cells has already been installed in the Texas Gigafactory, so this quarter the new production line should start up. From that moment on, Tesla will try to scale production month by month to cover the demand for this type of cell for its own vehicles.
At the Texas Gigafactory, Tesla is already producing a version with standard autonomy of the Model Y that integrates a structural battery pack with 4680 cells. The next step for the company, as production of these new cells increases, should be to use them also in the Great autonomy versions and Performance. Tesla currently uses smaller 2170 cells with lower energy density in these two versions.
As Baglino himself explained, the company is guaranteed the supply of 2170 cells for the production of vehicles throughout the year 2022. In this way, he considers that as production scales up, the 4680 cells will begin to be increasingly relevant. throughout 2023.
