Electric car manufacturer Tesla is slowly and patiently opening up its Supercharger charging network to other automakers’ electric cars. The process is gradually being implemented in Europe, but in North America it has picked up speed in recent weeks – two of the largest American car concerns, Ford and General Motors, have reached an agreement with Tesla that Ford and GM electric cars will use the Tesla NACS plug in the future, thus providing these cars with access to the Supercharger network. Analysts have estimated that this will allow Tesla to earn an additional 3 billion US dollars by 2030.
Plans call for the standard introduced by Tesla to be used by both Ford and GM starting next year. Those who have already purchased their Ford or GM electric car will also have access to the Supercharger network, but will have to use an adapter.
Market analysts from Piper Sandler have estimated that by 2030 this step will bring Tesla an additional 3 billion, and by 2032 the income will already be 5.2 billion dollars. Considering that Tesla’s income was 81 billion dollars last year, then 3 billion in six years does not seem like much, but it is still a serious amount, and it promotes the cooperation of the manufacturer with two of the leading car concerns on the North American continent. It is currently an open question whether another manufacturer will decide to do the same. In Europe, Supercharger equipment is equipped with the usual CCS plug, so at least here these issues are less relevant.
