(Elbil24): Tesla’s network of lightning chargers – so-called Superchargers – is the world’s largest. In total, there are now more than 35,000 charging stations worldwide.

In terms of design, the chargers stand out in several ways compared to the competition. For example, they have a large opening in the middle, where the charging cable is attached and which provides protection for the plug when the charger is not in use.

Short cable

At the same time, the chargers are primarily designed to be used by Tesla’s own car models, but now more and more of them are also being opened up for other electric cars.

However, this has led to some challenges when the cars have to park at the charging post, partly thanks to the short charging cable.

As is well known, electric cars have charging hatches located in different places, and then you often have to resort to creative parking in order to connect the car to the Tesla charger – such as this BMW i3:

Now, however, it may appear that the problem will be significantly reduced in future Tesla stations.

Revealed new design

In recent days, a number of international websites have discussed what may be the design of the fourth generation Supercharger (V4). Recognized Electrek is among those who claim that is The V4 design revealed.

In connection with planning a new Supercharger station in Danvers, Massachusetts, Tesla has attached drawings of what they themselves refer to as “alternative Tesla Supercharger pole”

The new charging post appears to be higher than existing V3 chargers. At the same time, the large opening in the middle is gone.

Instead, the cable is attached to the side, and appears to be significantly longer than on the V3. This increases flexibility, which can benefit other car brands.

Not confirmed

Tesla and Elon Musk have previously said that the company plans to increase the maximum output to 300-350 kW on future Superchargers (from 250 kW on the current V3 chargers), and several sources speculate that the more voluminous design is an indication that this is a more powerful charger than today’s.

Tesla has not yet confirmed whether this really concerns the fourth generation Supercharger, or whether it is just a variant of the V3. In any case, we will return with more information as soon as we know more.
