This week, Tesla once again proved its determination to fight for positions in the Chinese market, lowering the price of locally assembled Model Y crossovers by $1,900 in mid-range and high-end configurations. For the US market, the company also found a pleasant surprise: in the configurator on the Tesla website cheaper models of Model S and Model X became available for order, which for the sake of a profit of $ 10,000 force buyers to sacrifice range.

For the first time after the restyling of 2021, the Standard Range version appeared in the range of Tesla Model S and Model X trim levels in the US home market, which lowered the initial cost bar to $78,490 in the first case, and to $88,490 in the second. The Model S sedan in this case loses not only in EPA range, which decreases from 648 to 512 km, but also in acceleration time to 96 km / h, which increases from 3.1 to 3.7 seconds. Top speed is limited to the same value of 238 km/h. Recall that for $ 108,490 you can buy a three-engine version of the Tesla Model S Plaid, which overcomes the milestone of 96 km / h in 1.99 seconds and is capable of moving at speeds up to 320 km / h. Its power reserve is measured 634 km.
The Tesla Model X crossover in the Standard Range package offers an acceleration time to 96 km / h in no more than 4.4 seconds and a range of about 430 km. Its more expensive relative without postscripts in the name of the configuration provides a range of 557 km and acceleration time to 96 km / h in 3.8 seconds. At the same time, the cost of the car increases from $88,490 to $98,490. Adding another $10,000, you can get a Tesla Model X Plaid, which travels about 533 km without recharging, but limits the maximum speed to the same 238 km / h as the twin-engine versions. Acceleration time to 96 km / h in this case does not exceed 2.5 seconds.
How the range of the new initial versions of the Tesla Model S and Model X is limited will be reliably determined after the start of their deliveries to the US market, which is scheduled for September or October of this year. Previously, the company often limited the capacity of the traction battery available to the user by software, and especially suspicious customers could unlock the full power reserve after a certain period of operation for an extra charge. Given the modest production volumes of the Model S and Model X, as well as Tesla’s maniacal desire to reduce production costs, it can be assumed that the battery capacity of the Standard Range versions is also partially limited by software.
