Misalignment of latches or excessive cable wear … Electric giant forced to recall half a million Model 3s and Model Ss due to problems with vehicle trunks. On December 21, documents were sent to the US road safety agency, NHTSA, which took note of the recall.
A total of 356,309 Model 3 and 119,009 Model S are affected by this procedure. At issue: the repeated opening and closing of the Model 3 trunk door “liable to cause excessive wear of the coaxial cable” connected to the rear view camera. A defect that could make the camera unavailable to the driver.
The misalignment of one of the trunk latches on the front of Model S vehicles is also a problem. “The front trunk is likely to open unexpectedly and obstruct the driver’s visibility, which increases the risk of an accident”, Tesla said.
No reported accidents
According to the car manufacturer, 1% of Model 3 and 14% of Model S recalled will present the manufacturing defect.
To correct the malfunctions noted on the Model 3, the manufacturer plans to install free of charge a new harness and a new cable protector. For Model S, a simple repositioning of the safety latch should be sufficient, according to the American company, which specifies that customers who paid for this operation before the recall should not be reimbursed.
Finally, Tesla indicated that no accident related to these technical failures has not been brought to his attention.
