Tesla recalls 363,000 electric vehicles due to accident risk

Tesla announced on February 16 that it was recalling almost 363,000 electric vehicles. The company concluded that the beta version of the Full Self-Driving Beta (FSD Beta) system installed in these electric vehicles can lead to accidents. The recall was reported on Thursday (.pdf) US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

According to the NHTSA, electric vehicles using the FSD Beta can operate unsafely in some situations, such as when driving through an intersection, which can lead to accidents. Contrary to its name, FSD Beta is not a system that allows automatic driving in all cases without human intervention.

The recall will affect Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from different years of production. Tesla will not be recalling cars in the strict sense, the company will simply load new software into cars that solves these problems. Tesla founder Elon Musk tweeted: “The word ‘revoke’ for over-the-air software updates is anachronistic and completely wrong.”
