Tesla Recalls 2.2 Million Vehicles in the US Over Safety Risk

Electric car manufacturer Tesla is recalling 2.2 million vehicles in the United States, which means almost all of its electric cars. This is due to the incorrect font size of the warning lights, which increases the risk of an accident. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced this on Friday.

This is the biggest recall for Tesla so far, the agency pointed out Reuters. Two months ago, Tesla had to recheck 2.03 million cars to install new safeguards in its advanced Autopilot assistance system. At the same time, Tesla is under the scrutiny of the NHTSA because of its assisted steering, which is supposed to allow vehicles to automatically steer, accelerate and brake within a lane.

The recall affects vehicles of various models, including the 2017 to 2023 Model S, Model X, Model 3, Model X and Cybertruck pickup trucks. Tesla added that Cybertruck cars now in production will have an update to fix the problem.

“Warning lights with a smaller font size can make it difficult to read safety-critical information on the instrument panel, increasing the risk of a crash,” according to NHTSA.

Tesla has started releasing a free software update over-the-air, i.e. without the need for a physical connection, to fix this problem. This will increase the font size of the brake, parking system and ABS warning lights.

In addition, Reuters also reported that the NHTSA plans to begin inspecting about 334,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from the 2023 model year due to repeated power steering problems. The office already dealt with this problem in July last year, when 2,388 complaints were reported.
