Tesla is recalling approximately 119,000 Model S models in the US to repair the front trunk, which can open while driving. All Model 3 units delivered in the US until September 2020 must also be returned due to a problem with the trunk.
The problem with the Model S is bigger and affects more copies than that with the Model 3. The recall in the US is 356,309 units of the Model 3, with an estimated 1 percent having the trunk problem. That’s around 3,500 Model 3s that would have the problem. Those 356,309 cars are virtually all models delivered in the country between 2017 and September 2020. The Model S is 119,009 units, of which 14 percent would have the front box or frunk problem. So that is expected to be around 16,600 cars with the issue.
On the Model 3, repeatedly opening and closing the trunk can damage the rear camera cable. As a result, it can stop functioning and the image is no longer visible on the screen. On the Model S, if the primary latch fails and the second latch fails, the front trunk lid may pop open. If that happens, drivers will no longer be able to see the road.
It is unknown whether there will also be a recall in the Netherlands and Belgium. A spokesperson could not be reached by phone on Thursday. Recalls are common in the car market, although it is less common for a manufacturer to recall all units produced, as is now the case with the Model 3.
