Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said Tesla had plans to invest in Indonesia again. But Luhut said the process was not that easy because the company owned by Elon Musk had to meet the conditions he set.
“This morning, I got a call from America, Tesla said he wanted to make a deal with us,” admitted Luhut at the Closing Ceremony Business Matching Domestic Product Shopping 2022.
To note, this is not the first time Tesla has revealed plans to invest in Indonesia. Some time ago it was widely reported that Tesla would invest in the development of lithium batteries in the country.
This plan has not been realized until now.
Luhut said two years ago Tesla’s investment plan in Indonesia was canceled because they dictated too much. Now if Tesla really wants to enter Indonesia, Luhut has set a number of conditions that must be met.
“I said, ‘Hey you, it was two years ago that you called me wanting to make a lithium battery’. You… all want to dictate, I said, ‘Hey you cannot do this. Today is different. We have to be the same’. I said ‘You can’t do that anymore. This country is not banana republic! This country is a great country!” Luhut’s story is quoted from Antara.

Luhut emphasized that if Tesla wanted to enter Indonesia, then they had to comply with the conditions given by the Indonesian government. The same applies to other investors, including from China.
These requirements include technology transfer, environmentally friendly technology, the obligation to educate local workers, and provide added value.
“I don’t want a deal, don’t let you (Tesla) make conditions for us. I make conditions for you because that’s what I did to China. China has never given conditions to me, I (who) gave conditions. You want what if we have to go B to B? It has to be transfer technology, it has to be first class technology, it has to be environmentally friendly. He said he could, (so), okay deal,” said Luhut.
Talking about electric vehicle batteries, currently Indonesia has collaborated with two companies from China and South Korea, namely CATL and LG. The two companies are claimed to control 55 percent of the world’s electric vehicle battery market share.
