The electric car manufacturer Tesla sold more cars in the US state of California in the second quarter of this year than the long-term market leader Toyota, and Tesla has the two most popular models in the state by far.
It’s no secret that California is ahead of other US states and even many countries when it comes to zero-emission mobility. Data from the California New Car Dealers Association for the second quarter show that Tesla has moved far ahead of former leaders Toyota. By far the best-selling car in the state year-to-date has been the Tesla Model Y with 74,765 units, followed by the Model 3 with 41,718 units. The closest follower, the Toyota Camry, has 27,169 units sold, while the RAV4 has 26,032 units.

Taking the second quarter separately, Tesla managed to sell 69,212 cars, while Toyota sold 67,482 cars. It is the first time in history that Tesla has sold more cars than Toyota in California. Only Honda broke the threshold of 40,000 cars sold. Sales data shows that in California, electric cars account for 21.1% of the market share. Although they still have a long way to go to reach the Norwegian level, California is also ahead of many other US states and countries.
