Tesla Offers Autopilot and Full Self-Drive Licensing to Other Automakers

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced via the social networking site Twitter that Tesla would be willing to license its driving assistance systems, namely Autopilot and Full Self-Drive, to other automakers if they show interest. Other technologies developed by Tesla would also be available for licensing to other companies.

This is very well in line with Musk’s own statement that Tesla is ready to provide its technologies to others – back in 2014, Tesla made its patents publicly available to anyone who wanted to use them. Now he is ready to offer very sophisticated driving assistance systems. “Tesla aims to be as useful as possible in cooperation with other automakers. We made all our patents freely available several years ago. We now allow other companies to use the Supercharger network and are ready to license Autopilot/FSD and our other technologies,” Musk writes in his Twitter post.

Tesla’s supremacy with their Supercharger charging network is almost impossible to dispute, however, the interest in Autopilot and Full Self-Drive from other manufacturers is a pressing issue at the moment. Many manufacturers are currently working on similar technologies, but maybe someone will decide that it is not worth investing a lot of money in developing their own systems, instead adopting what Tesla has developed. In any case, the cars will have to be equipped with cameras, radars and other things to make these systems work and, in the end, combine all this with the rest of the electronic control of the car.
