Tesla offers a function facilitating the loan of its vehicle between individuals

After robotaxis and carpooling projects with unsuccessful drivers, Tesla is experimenting with a car-sharing solution. Thus, the manufacturer has implemented an application authorizing the loan of Tesla from individual to individual.

Pending the arrival of a carpool service made up of a fleet of robotic vehicles, Tesla offers an alternative solution, vehicle loan between individuals. The Californian manufacturer has set up an application for Tesla owners to lend their vehicle to third parties.

This new function concerns the Tesla Model 3. Thus, each owner sees appear on his Tesla account a section “Access to cars” where the driver’s e-mail is indicated to whom we wish to lend the vehicle – up to 5 different users.

Then, the designated driver (s) receive an e-mail from Tesla advising them that they are authorized to use the Model 3 in question, provided they download the Tesla mobile application, which will be used as sesame.

However, it is not specified if the owner of the Tesla can restrict access to certain commands, limit the maximum speed or audio volume, like the manufacturer Ford with its MyKey function. The only difference is that Ford uses a second ignition key to configure from the on-board computer.

From robotaxis to carpooling with driver

In April 2019, we mentioned the objective for the manufacturer Tesla to offer, from 2020, a robotic carpooling service, composed of a fleet of Model S and 3. The particularity of this new service: to offer private owners of make their Tesla vehicle available or withdrawn from service.

Of course, this provision of Tesla would bring a few dollars to each owner after deduction of the manufacturer’s commission – between 25% and 30%. The Californian firm had expected that they could expect a gross profit of $ 0.65 per mile (or 58 cents per 1.6 km), or $ 30,000 on average per year and per vehicle. Only condition, keep the vehicle at least 11 years.

However, last February, Tesla announced the postponement of its project due to an inadequate legislative framework, and above all an Autopilot not yet 100% autonomous. It was then envisaged to set up a VTC type service, with a driver behind each steering wheel of a Tesla available within the service. But again, nothing has been done.
