Tesla, off the radar from Model S and Model X

Tesla the development of his is continuing new “Tesla Vision” system that for the assisted driving functions uses only cameras and neural networks (in addition to ultrasound sensors). In May 2021, as we know, the manufacturer decided to remove radar from Model 3 and Model Y. Elon Musk’s company, at the time, claimed that it would start using this new system on these models as they are more widely used. Also a way to get the feedback needed to optimize its new technology more quickly. For Model S and Model X, on the other hand, had not been given a specific date.

Now, Tesla has finally decided to take it one step further and has decided to remove the radar also from the Model S and Model X produced from mid-February 2022. These cars, therefore, will only have the “Tesla Vision” system. Inside the Tesla website you can read:

As of mid-February 2022, all Model S and Model X built for the North American market use Tesla Vision. All Model S and Model X previously built for the North American market are equipped with radar.

The American manufacturer recalls that there are still limitations for cars that have the system “Tesla Vision“although fewer than when it was launched on the first cars several months ago. As you can read, in fact, the Autosteer function is limited to a maximum speed of 80 miles per hour (about 128 km / h). In addition, the distance minimum from the vehicle in front is greater than that in its radar-equipped cars.

On the page dedicated to “Tesla Vision”, the manufacturer continues to promise that all full functionality will be restored through a series of OTA updates. As we know, Elon Musk is focusing a lot on this technology which he considers much more precise and reliable thanks to the development of neural networks. A very different choice from other car manufacturers which, on the other hand, intend to focus on radar and many more sensors in order to offer a precise and reliable driving assistance system. Herbert Diessfor example, just recently said that the use of LiDAR is essential to offer a Level 3 driver assistance system.
