Tesla beats the competition again, China’s BYD Atto 3 outsells BMW 5 Series in August
Tesla Model Y is back on top in Europe after a record strong August, according to data from analytics company DataForce. The American electric car managed to overtake the Dacia Sandero even before Tesla’s traditionally expected increase in deliveries at the end of the quarter, and is already more than 5,000 cars ahead of the Romanian budget model. The Volkswagen T-Roc completes the top three best-selling new models on the Old Continent, with no prospect of any of the three being displaced by the end of the year. China’s BYD Atto 3 outsold the BMW 5 Series in Europe in August. The BYD brand itself, although only present in seven markets, is already bigger in Europe than Alfa Romeo or Subaru. August data also points to an increasing pace of the Chinese invasion of Europe. There is still no Chinese-brand model in the top 50 best-sellers, but the electric MG 4 is on the edge, taking 53rd position, with 48,013 new registrations in the first eight months. The small Chinese electric car Ora Funky Cat beat the Nissan X-Trail in August registrations (2,293), and the BYD Atto 3 was outsold that month by the BMW 5 Series. The BYD brand itself is ahead of Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Subaru. Several more Chinese brands enjoyed triple-digit growth – Great Wall (+456%), Nio (+279%) and Xpeng (+115%).
