Tesla Model Y: The Best-Selling Electric Car In The World With Over 6 Million Units Produced

You can also listen to the article in audio version.

It started in 2008 with the Tesla Roadster, which was actually just a battery-powered Lotus Elise. A derided car then, now a high-value collector’s rarity. Since that moment, 6 million electric cars have already left the gates of several car factories.

It is no surprise that her anniversary car was the bestseller Model Y, which is currently the best-selling car not only in Europe, but also in the world. Last year alone, Tesla reported 1.23 million copies of this model.

In any case, the carousel of records might not end there, because the North American manufacturer plans to launch a massive production of cybertrucks, and clients will probably continue to be interested in the modernized Model 3 Highland. Despite expectations, we will not see the facelifted Model Y, which is called Juniper, this year.

Tesla’s most popular car is the Model Y.

The manufacturer’s statements also show that its factories are not running at full capacity, which is not only in the case of the Berlin Gigafactory, for example, due to production downtime due to the absence of parts or attacks by eco activists, but simply because Tesla’s factories have not hit the “speed limiter”.

We will remind you that the manufacturer’s production wheels are still turning fast, because the milestone of four million cars produced was celebrated by Tesla in March 2023, while the number five million was already lit up in September 2023. It crossed the 6 million mark at the end of March 2024, which indicates a consistent production capacity, however it is said to grow even more.

The Tesla factories are said not to be running at full capacity. Their production is still to grow.

The main competitor in the race for the electrification leader is the Chinese giant BYD. The latter also recently celebrated an interesting milestone, and even higher than Tesla’s, but it was “only” a plug-in hybrid with serial number 7 million. However, BYD is also strongly developing a model line of pure electric cars, most recently it attracted attention with the extremely cheap Seagull model.

On the other hand, the Sword of Damocles generally hangs over Chinese brands in a similarly possible punitive tariff, which would slow their growth while the electric train called the Tesla Express chugs along.
