Tesla Model Y: How to Get Out of the Car Without Electricity | NHTSA Complaints and Solution

Seventy-three-year-old Rick Meggison of Arizona got into his Tesla Model Y and found he couldn’t get out. The car was completely “dead” – the central display did not work, and what’s more, neither did the standard “knobs” in the form of buttons to open the door on the handle.

“I couldn’t open the door, I couldn’t roll down the windows. The computer was dead so I couldn’t open the passenger box. I couldn’t open anything,” he told ABC7 television. The car had a completely discharged on-board 12V battery, which drives these systems, as in every car.

All cars with electronic door handles, activated by a button, must also have an emergency way out of the car. In the case of the Tesla in question, it is a small lever for controlling the windows. It is not marked, but the user manual describes its function.

Meggison eventually got out of the car within 20 minutes with the help of his sister, who managed to open the car remotely through a smartphone app. Now he’s asking the automaker to better explain how to get out of the car in the event of a similar problem.

But he is not alone who does not know how to open the door of his car without electricity. The American agency NHTSA, which takes care of road safety, registers a number of complaints on this topic – that people do not know about the emergency handles of their Teslas.
