Elon Musk already stated in April that Tesla will focus on increasing production capacity at the expense of profitability. So he does, and the strategy seems to be working. In the first half of 2023, the best-selling car in Europe across all categories was the Tesla Model Y. For the first time, this electric SUV also surpassed cheap internal combustion vehicles such as the Dacia Sandero.
Tesla pulled off an incredible stunt. In the first half of the year, it sold almost 140,000 Model Y cars, which is basically double compared to the same period in 2022. The Model 3 is also very successful, coming in second place. The Volvo XC40 small SUV continues, followed by the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.3 electric cars. Škoda Enyaq took eighth place in the ranking.

How does Tesla do it?
The increase in Tesla’s share of the European market is due to several factors. One of them is the good availability of cars thanks to the increase in local production, so you no longer have to wait months or years for a new electric car. Furthermore, the reduction in sales prices, which for example in Germany amounted to discounts of 200,000 crowns, also probably helped. The global boom in electric cars is also helping. For many, Tesla is still a kind of standard of electromobility.

It is interesting that the cheap electric cars Renault Twingo EV or Renault Zoe did not make it into the top twenty. On the contrary, we can talk about success with the Fiat 500e, which took the sixth place and thus distanced itself from its competitor in the segment of small cars, Dacia Spring (10th place). Among internal combustion cars, the most successful is the Dacia Sandero or the Volkswagen T-Roc, but neither of them has surpassed the Model Y in sales.
