Tesla Model Y disassembled and analyzed by an expert

Accustomed to the exercise, automotive expert Sandy Munro has completely dismantled a Tesla Model Y. His conclusion is clear: the new California electric SUV is much better designed than the Model 3 he had inspected at the time of its release .

Braking device, suspensions, quality of assembly, materials used … in more than a dozen videos published on his Youtube channel, Sandy Munro details the dismantling procedure for a Tesla Model Y that he was able to analyze piece by piece . An exercise that he had already been able to do when the Model 3 was released. At the time, the results had been rather catastrophic and the expert had compared the quality of certain parts to “Kia from the 90s”. A few years later, the verdict is very different with a Model Y which has benefited from the many optimizations brought by Tesla on its production processes. Improvements that also benefit the Model 3, the sedan sharing more than 70% of its parts with the SUV.

Visibly impressed by the modifications made by the manufacturer, Sandy Munro goes into the details of the different parts that make up the Model Y: heat pump, motors, wiring, etc. By “exploring” the Model Y, the expert was also able to do some discoveries such as the use of polypropylene (EPP) to raise the vehicle floor. A trick that allowed the manufacturer to reuse identical parts of the Model 3 to save money.

The rear molding of the SUV was also scrutinized. On the Model 3, Sandy Munro had estimated that it contained too many useless parts. Critics which the manufacturer seems to have taken into account on the Model Y with a much simpler assembly.

The manufacturing quality was also appreciated. Pointed out during the first Model 3 deliveries, the defects on the finish and alignment of the body parts seem to have been corrected on the Model Y.
