Tesla Model S Plaid Track Package Review: Impressive Performance and Apology

– I think I owe Tesla an apology.

– I think I owe Tesla an apology.

This is how car tester and Youtuber Misha Charoudin begins a new video where he has tested Tesla’s Model S Plaid again – this time on a car with the new “Track Package” installed.

– This is significantly more refined and stable, he says in the video.

Tough criticism

The reason for the apology is that Charoudin made scathing criticism after driving the original Model S Plaid at the legendary Nürburgring earlier this year.

He then concluded that the car is not stable in bends and over bumps and feels heavy, while the brakes and seats in the car also received criticism. The original Plaid brakes were “like butter”, according to Charoudin.

New aluminum rims, brake calipers and tires that cannot be used on normal roads are among the components of Tesla’s Track Package.

Now he has tried the Track package, and says he is “impressed” – despite the fact that the car was driven on the standard tires from Michelin (Pilot Sport 4S) and not the special Track Package tires from Goodyear (Supercar 3R). They are not legal to use on normal roads.

Otherwise, the track package includes, among other things, forged aluminum rims, new brake discs with silicon carbide, new brake calipers and brake fluid, in addition to adjustments to the software that controls, among other things, damping.

The package costs just under NOK 200,000 in Norway, and among other things increases the top speed of the Model S Plaid from 280 to 322 kilometers per hour.

– Neutral, but playful

How the torque is adjusted to each of the wheels is also something Charoudin highlights while sitting behind the wheel. Stable and controllable are also words he uses about the car.

– Very, very good. The car is very neutral, but at the same time playful. It does what you expect it to do. One thing we could see is that it couldn’t complete a full lap without overheating (which reduces engine power, jour. note), but it cools down relatively quickly, says Charoudin.

Top Gear also boasts the Model S Plaid, although they describe the track pack as a “fun but mostly unnecessary” addition. However, they highlight the ceramic brakes as an exception.

– They completely transform this car, because in practice it stops exactly as you want it to. If you are going to drive on a track, you need the track package. It’s just not the ultimate track car, says test journalist Tom Ford.
