The S Plaid surpassed the Porsche Taycan by less than 12 seconds and set a record for the fastest production electric car.

The record-breaking drive of the Tesla Model S Plaid at the famous Nürburgring was first discussed in 2019, when the carmaker was supposed to set a time of around 7 minutes and 23 seconds. At that time, however, these were unofficial results achieved with the development prototype. But the development is over, the Plaid version is for sale, so it’s time for an official attempt.
The carmaker had to use a completely standard Model S Plaid for it without any changes – exactly as it left the factory. At least that’s what Elon Musk says on Twitter, who also boasted the results of two races. In one car he reached a time of 7: 35.579, but in the record he already covered the circuit in 7: 30.909 at an average speed of 166,320 km / h.

The previous record holder among production electric sedans, which was a Porsche Taycan Turbo with a time of 7:42 from August 2019, surpassed the Tesla Model S with a relatively significant margin of less than 12 seconds. Originally, however, Musk promised an even greater time difference.
When speculation began to spread in September 2019, according to which the prototype Model S Plaid managed the circuit on the Ring almost 20 seconds faster than Porsche, Elon Musk responded via Twitter that this was only the beginning and that these circuit times would eventually be surpassed by the seven-seater production. Although this did not happen, the result of the electric sedan is still impressive. Even among production sedans with internal combustion engines, there are no longer many faster competitors. It is certainly worth mentioning, for example, the Mercedes-AMG GT63S with a time of 7: 27,800 or the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 with a time of 7: 23,164. In the world of two-door sports cars, the situation is different, but even that may change in the future.
Musk has already mentioned on Twitter that next time the Model S Plaid could hit the circuit in a modified version with improved aerodynamics, carbon brakes and circuit tires, which could significantly affect the time on the 20.6-kilometer-long track.
