Tesla Model S Battery Degradation: Symptoms and Challenges After 10 Years and 300,000+ km

The cars from the first years of Tesla Model S production are somewhat already known for the fact that their batteries do not last a very long time, over 300 thousand km. In the meantime, technologies have also evolved a lot at Tesla, but it’s still curious to see what symptoms can be indicated by cars that have already gathered an age of 9-10 years and an honorable journey of over 370 thousand km, arriving with a degraded battery.

In fact, the Tesla in the Norwegian’s video is on its 2nd battery, due to an initial problem, after only a year of manufacture. The current battery is 9 years old and less than 300 thousand km, says the Norwegian YouTuber.

It still works relatively well, he says, although his system appears to have been configured to keep an unusable 4kWh reserve, so as not to have surprises from battery-draining voltage drops.

The Youtuber tried to go deeper than that 4 kWh limit. But after only 1 kWh in that area, the car lost all power and had to pull to the right. This is where the real challenges began, when the driver noticed that the car was refusing to electronically open the charging port, trunk and even the front hood due to the battery’s failure mode.

Basically, anything she tried to do was met with an error, and thus the charging cable could not be removed from the car, nor could its additional backup battery, for such situations. And the charging port couldn’t be opened to charge either. And meanwhile the 12V battery stopped almost all the elements that use it.

So it was necessary to ask for help in the form of an intervention truck. The truck driver came over with a 12V battery charger, and the car sprang to life, opening both the charging port and its hood. Thus, access to the cables, battery and port could be ensured and the matter started to be charged again.

The problem is that after this deep discharge experience, the parameters of the already used battery went crazy. So there is a risk that it has been damaged too much by this discharge and will require replacement later. But essentially the problem here was ignoring the limits the car’s software included and trying to go below its net limit. And besides that, it seems that the 12V battery was also quite old, quickly dropping its voltage from the 14 volts it normally supplies to about 11 volts, and thus the car disconnected a lot of functions. So, even with an electric car, it is important to keep this battery in good condition, and with an older car, with a battery that is clearly degraded, it is important to avoid situations in which the software’s recommendations are neglected and thus go to limit. It’s like in an older car you only run on the gas vapors in the tank and then the injectors or the pump would fail. It’s not necessarily the car’s fault, then.
