The mechanics of the US electric car manufacturing company “Tesla Motors” are holding a strike in Sweden on Friday to protest against the automaker’s unwillingness to sign a collective labor agreement, the IF Metall union announced.
The strike affects about 130 Tesla mechanics at seven repair shops in Sweden.
IF Metall explains that Tesla workers have lower wages, different insurances and lower pensions than other workers in the industry.
“Tesla” informed the union on Tuesday that it will not sign a collective labor agreement, as the company does not do so anywhere in the world, reports “IF Metall”.
Unless Tesla changes its stance, the union will expand the strike on November 3 to cover all repairs of Tesla cars carried out by garages across Sweden, not just those carried out by Tesla employees.
Collective agreements, negotiated on a sector-by-sector basis, form the basis of the Swedish labor market model, covering almost 90% of the workforce in Sweden and guaranteeing standard wages and working conditions.
IF Metall also emphasizes that collective agreements allow companies to operate under equal conditions, eliminating the risk that an employer could distort competition in the industry by imposing poor working conditions on its employees.
