Tesla Makes US Charging Standard Available to Other Manufacturers – Picture & Sound – News

Tesla is making the EV charging system used for the North American market available to other manufacturers. The Tesla charger in question will be renamed the North American Charging Standard.

By releasing the specifications of the already renamed NACS cable, the company hopes that other manufacturers will adopt the standard. In their own words the cable in question has “no moving parts, is half the size and twice as powerful” as the Combined Charging System, the leading charging cable competitor in North America.

Additionally, Tesla claims that there are twice as many NACS vehicles as CCS cars in North America and that there are 60 percent more Supercharger charging points in the same region than all CCS charging points combined. Tesla was the first major EV manufacturer and therefore has a large share of the North American market.

However, most of the major EV manufacturers are using the CCS standard so far. BMW, Polestar, Renault, Volkswagen, Audi and Jaguar, among others, use the relevant standard to charge electric vehicles. Several Tesla vehicles are also CCS compatible via an adapter.
