At the stage of market expansion of older Tesla models, the company offered customers the right to charge for free at branded Supercharger stations throughout the entire life cycle of the purchased electric car, but since 2018 it considers such offers to be excessively generous, and resorts to them in exceptionally rare cases. Now the company is trying to deprive owners of old Model S and Model X of this privilege if they agree to exchange their cars for new ones.
A specialized resource told about the details of the marketing campaign Electrek. Earlier this year, the company offered free-of-charge lifetime charging to those who traded in their old Model S and Model X for new electric vehicles of the same models in exchange for a $5,000 discount on the purchase of a new electric vehicle. Now ready to receive new cars before June 30 this year, Tesla customers in the US can take advantage of another offer.
The right to free charging is tied to a specific electric vehicle registered to a specific car owner. If he changes the car, then the right of free charging does not pass to the new owner. Accordingly, when the owner parted with his electric car, which he had the right to charge for free for life, such a privilege no longer applies to a new car. But for Americans who have time to buy their Model S or Model X, Tesla announced a new promotion: when exchanging old cars for new ones, the buyer gets the right to charge an electric car an unlimited number of times at branded Supercharger stations for six years without payment.
Even if the client does not use the trade-in service, within the specified time frame, when buying a new Tesla Model S or Model X, he receives the right to charge free of charge at branded stations for three years. Perhaps this bonus is intended to partly offset the recent increase in the price of these electric vehicles in the US by $2,500. It is simply not profitable for the company in the long run to provide free charging to car owners on an indefinite basis, so the corresponding privileges will now have an expiration date, and owners of older cars will sooner or later lose them due to natural causes.
