Tesla leaves students stranded: Musk’s ax also falls on internships

MILANO Even interns end up sacrificed on the altar of Musk’s efficiency recovery he wants for his Tesla, an electric car company in the midst of a relaunch attempt after a very disappointing first part of the year for deliveries. Months marked by the cooling of demand for electric vehicles, but also by the growing competition from Chinese manufacturers who have become true giants in the export of electric cars.

To remedy this situation, the South African entrepreneur decided to cut 10% of his staff; he has started a series of revisions to the price list to try to empty the forecourts; he promised an acceleration in the development of new cars with more affordable costs, without forgetting the medium-term challenge of a robotaxi and autonomous driving.

In all of this, as mentioned, it seems that even the possibilities of carrying out internships at the Texas-based company have frozen overnight. The story is reconstructed there Bloomberg, which explains how aspiring young workers find their offers for a temporary position cancelled, just a few weeks before starting their internships. So much so that they then flock to the LinkedIn social network to ask other employers to welcome them.

“At 8:46 a.m. I opened an email from Tesla for flight information. At 11:25 a.m., my internship offer was gone,” reads a post on the Tesla platform. Joshua Schreiber, a student at the University of Miamiwho said there were three weeks to go until the start date and that he had already spent “thousands of euros on accommodation”.

Schreiber, explains the financial agency, finds himself at this point in an “uncomfortable” situation because the school year is coming to an end and the little notice of the change in direction at Tesla leaves them without much time to find a replacement job for the summer. There are also cases in which Tesla employees speak out for the difficulties of interns left behind by the company: “Please make our loss your gain!”, wrote for example Diana Rosenberg, who takes care of the battery department, inviting other companies to take on an intern who will no longer go to his department.

With the Supercharger team cut, there is concern

On the other hand, after announcing the “difficult decision” to cut 10% of workers, Musk pushed for the exit of some executives and the same financial agency recalled how the ax fell on the 500 of the Supercharger division and also as part of the marketing team. Precisely regarding the dismissal of the team responsible for the brand’s vehicle charging network, there are widespread fears in the sector because it is feared that it will also cause difficulties for other car manufacturers that were supposed to join the network.

Tesla said it still plans to add to its Supercharger network, “just at a slower pace for new locations,” it said in a social media message.

As for interns, one wonders how much Tesla will be able to save by cutting internships, considering that in some cases these are unpaid positions while – according to Glassdoor data – paid internships at the company generally offer from 18 to 28 dollars time.
