Tesla is testing a more advanced Autopilot. The footage shows that he is driving like a bad driver

The system of advanced driving assistants, which Tesla misleadingly calls “Full Self Driving Beta”, is quite often referred to as “fully automatic driving in beta”. Recently, it was in connection with the notion that the system “can do the wrong thing at the most inopportune moment”, so the driver-person has to watch the car closely. That he is driving alone is indicated on the central display by a white steering wheel icon in a blue circle.

Of course – the beta version is not a finished product and everyone who uses it is basically a test pilot. And many of them even act like test pilots – deliberately taking their Tesla into difficult situations. For example, to one of the most dangerous roundabouts in Michigan in the hands of a youtuber known as Dirty Tesla.

The roundabout in question is not entirely banal, it has two lanes, all its branches also have two lanes in each direction of travel, and in addition the diameter is quite small, so drivers have little time to decide and react to other cars.

In addition, roundabouts are not nearly as common in the United States as in Europe, so there are quite a few accidents here.

On the arrival, which we see in the video from 5:33, the car in the left lane behaved in an exemplary manner – it did not stop at the “Prefer driving” sign, because it was not needed, and after the detour it continued in the left lane. When exiting, it turned on the right turn signal correctly, but instead of the left lane on the exit, it turned right, which could mean an accident if there was another car on the right and wanted to drive in the same direction.

After the passage, it also remained in the right lane, which was intended only for turning to the right, through several intersections. Before the second attempt at the roundabout, he also erroneously crossed a full line on the road, until the driver-man had to intervene.

The second attempt to pass the roundabout did not have a perfect start, the driver-man had to use the accelerator pedal to force the car to start. But then the car drove correctly in its lane and on the exit it remained correctly in the left lane.

This is followed by an attempt at the so-called “Michigan” left turn (English “Michigan Left”), where a person passes a straight level intersection of two roads, where at least one has a physical central dividing strip to turn around at a designated location, returned to the intersection and turned right onto the road he originally wanted. The car can’t handle it due to an inaccurate map, so the driver takes it in his hands.

On the way further, Tesla turns right from the left lane, which is also a mistake, but in the time from 10:01 she managed perfectly with two left turns right behind each other at two separate intersections. From 12:58, it will also stop well on the “stop sign” and give priority to cars arriving on the main road.

In the time from 15:25, he will handle the embrace of a standing truck. It is interesting that the car on the display before the autopilot was switched on had an imaginary trajectory along which the obstacle will go around, and after a while another one. It is also interesting how they can cope with transverse thresholds on a straight road from 16:34 – excellent.

Among other things, the video shows that Autopilot does not take into account any holes in the road that a driver-man would avoid. He also enters the wrong lane here and there, but mostly he can fix it himself. However, he recognizes the red traffic light from the green light and also manages to turn right to the red light, which is legal in the USA.

The second, slightly older and shorter recording of youtuber Dave Mac shows a mere overtaking of a garbage truck – but a little more complicated than the trucks in the first video. This is where the garbage man starts just before Tesla. She drives to the center of the road so that the cameras can see around the garbage can, but when she finds out that the truck has started, it does not overtake it and stays in its lane. It’s not exactly a confident ride, the car zigzags a bit, but the reaction is right.

Tesla overtakes the garbage truck only when he stops at other garbage cans. Unfortunately, not very smoothly, at the front of the garbage truck, it drives too far to the right for a moment, but it does it itself and does not require the intervention of a driver-person. But then it stays in the opposite lane for an unnecessarily long time.

These two videos show that the near-automatic steering in the Tesla Model 3 is very capable, but needs to be constantly monitored. It is, of course, far from its name, ie “fully automatic steering”, but it is on its way to levels 3 and 4 of autonomous driving.
