Tesla is leaving radars, assistance systems rely only on cameras

These will be the first tesla to rely fully on camera feedback when providing features such as Autopilot or lane change.

The removal of forward-facing radar sensors is an important step. Most car manufacturers rely on radar to help the car “see” objects at speed, have feedback in bad weather and impaired visibility.

However, radar sensors are relatively expensive and the processing of data from them requires considerable computing power in the vehicle. Tesla has previously indicated this step to shareholders. CEO Elon Musk also tweeted on March 12 that the company would move to a “pure vision” approach.

According to Tesla, the reason why the 3 and Y models were chosen first for the new technology is the simple fact that they are the brand’s best-selling electric cars. The brand believes that large amounts of real-world data will shorten optimization times.

Some self-steering features will initially be restricted for safety reasons. However, the California carmaker assures that customers who have already ordered a Model 3 or Model Y but were unaware of this modification will be notified before accepting the car.
