Tesla installs huge casting machine for Model Y> teslamag.de

The Third Row Tesla podcast spoke to two experts about the new Model Y who are very familiar with it – one of them was even CEO Elon Musk personally. In the latest installment, Musk and production expert Sandy Munro, who has recently been gradually dismantling a Model Y, confirmed that the latest Tesla has many improvements over the Model 3. And Musk explained why he ordered two huge casting machines for it, the first of which will be installed from May.

Tesla boss and decomposer understand each other

Third Row’s latest podcast has not yet been released widely, but the CleanTechnica blog is already reporting in part. The engineer Munro, who worked for decades in the US auto industry and then worked for him, owes his fame to harsh criticism of the construction of parts of the Model 3, among other things. Later he discovered more and more positive aspects, especially the Model Y that he bought and analyzed since the beginning of April. Musk said on Twitter that he very much appreciates Munro’s qualified criticism.

According to CleanTechnica, Tesla boss Musk and Tesla Zerzer got on well in the podcast. Musk announced a technically interesting piece of news, which Munro commented with an impressed “Wow!”: Later this year, the rear frame part of the Model Y would be cast in one piece, the CEO announced. As Munro had already found out, it no longer consists of dozens of parts like the Model 3, but only two parts plus a connecting bracket.

House-sized machines for Tesla

That is a big improvement, as Munro confirmed, but three will become one, Musk said in the podcast, CleanTechnica announced, that Tesla had bought two of the world’s largest casting machines – “as big as a small house”. The installation of the first of these, bought in Italy, should begin around May. Tesla itself applied for a patent for a giant casting machine, as was announced in summer 2019. How this relates to the purchase from Italy remains open at first.

But not that Tesla wants to make the production of the Model Y even more efficient with the cast single part: According to Musk, this reduces the costs considerably, and the space required for body production decreases by 30 percent – “that is a huge amount “. The Tesla CEO confirmed that the Model 3 could also benefit from the casting innovation in the future, but probably only in two years. There are currently more important things to do, and Tesla has to live with the annoying burden of early mistakes in the meantime.
