Tesla has revealed the design of a branded charger in hopes of making it the new standard

American electric car maker Tesla wants its charger to become the new industry standard. To do so, the company officially renamed the Tesla EV charging connector to the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and opened it up to other manufacturers.

The North American charging standard debuted with the Model S in 2012, though it was simply referred to as the Tesla Charger at the time. Now the automaker wants its charging standard to be used by other companies. If Tesla charging becomes the new industry standard, it could eventually replace the more common CCS standard in the future.

At present, no charging station company or car manufacturer has announced plans to use the NACS standard in their products. It’s entirely possible that no competitor to Tesla wants to use the company’s charging port. Variations of the CCS standard dominate electric vehicle markets not only in the United States, but also in Europe, although it is possible that the Tesla standard has its advantages.

The Tesla report notes that the NACS standard has been in use for more than a decade, charging has no moving parts and is more powerful than CCS charging stations. It was also reported that the network operators of charging stations are already planning to implement NACS, so owners of Tesla electric vehicles will be able to do without adapters in the future if they need to replenish energy at a third-party station.
