Tesla has patented a new type of battery with 3x higher energy density, but it has one major problem

Tesla comes up with another patent that promises cheaper and better batteries. AND Elon Musk again promises full-fledged robotic control.

In addition to Tesla, Lamborghini also has a penchant for a new type of battery.

Tesla has its own team of scientists working to improve existing types of batteriesbut also research new. This is Jeff Dahn and his team at Dalhousie University.

The new patent is focused on anode-free lithium-metal batteries. This is a special type of lithium battery that could offer an energy density of up to 500 Wh / kg (1200 Wh / l) at the cell level. So two to three times more than current li-ion batteries offer.

However, a long-term problem with this type of batteries is their service life, resp. number of cycles. Right here, according to a new patent, Jeff Dahn and his gang they were able to improve – but only to the level of 50 cycles.

In order to be able to send anode-free lithium batteries to commercial production, at least a thirty-fold improvement would be required. Fortunately, Tesla and Jeff Dahn are far from alone in their research into this new type of battery.

Alessandra Accogli from the Milan Polytechnic, for example, deals with the same issue. After all, you already have her there as well Lamborghini looked up.
