For many customers and prospects, electric cars are practically synonymous with Tesla. This was the result of previous surveys, and the same result has now been obtained from a representative survey of German households – although many other manufacturers are now entering the electric car market. In fact, from 2019 to 2020, Tesla’s e-awareness increased even more than that of any other manufacturer, according to the survey.

More than 50% call Tesla

A total of 1,000 people were interviewed for the trend tachometer of the motor vehicle monitoring organization (KÜS), “who are partly responsible for questions about the car in the household,” the organization now announced. First of all, the survey shows how well known Tesla is in the market that the company has created itself in Germany: When asked which brands came to mind when it came to electric cars, 52 percent of those surveyed named Tesla. That was another 9 percentage points than a year ago.

German car manufacturers also increased their awareness of electric cars compared to the previous year. BMW was named in the new survey by 22 percent (after 16 percent in 2019), VW reached the same value after previously 15 percent. The awareness of the VW group sister Audi as a provider of electric cars also increased by 6 percentage points, but at 17 percent it is still lower than that of VW. Mercedes follows only after Toyota with 10 percent, which corresponds to an increase of only 2 percentage points.

A lot of skepticism about electric cars

As a result, Tesla as an electric car manufacturer is more than twice as well known among German customers as any domestic company. The relatively good placement of BMW could be explained by the fact that the Bavarian company does not want to develop pure electric car platforms anymore, but already launched a modern electric vehicle with the i3 in 2013. At VW, on the other hand, the many announced electric cars seem to have an impact on brand perception with the second largest increase after Tesla.

In addition, the KÜS survey shows that electric cars are still not easy on the German market. 71 percent each wanted none because of high prices and short ranges, 60 percent preferred a car with a “clean internal combustion engine”. And 56 percent didn’t think electric cars were the most environmentally friendly technology in automobiles.
