Owners of Tesla electric cars have started complaining in droves that their cars are locking them out after unexpected power issues. Such incidents became known after a British car blogger reported the problem, and since then the number of complaints has only increased.
At the end of last year, Tom Exton told his subscribers how his new Tesla Model Y electric car suddenly stopped on the highway, even though the battery charge was supposed to last more than 200 miles. After stopping, Exton was unable to exit the vehicle. He had to use the emergency door mechanism, which broke the window.
All Tesla models are equipped with emergency door handles. However, finding them without a guide can be difficult, especially in a panic situation. Besides Axton, other Tesla owners have had similar problems. In July, Rick Megison, 73, of Arizona, told how he found himself locked in his Model Y in a garage during the hot summer, when the temperature inside the car can reach 54 degrees Celsius.
This happened after his Model Y suddenly lost power. “I couldn’t open the doors. I couldn’t roll down the windows. The computer died and I couldn’t open the glove compartment. I couldn’t open anything,” Megison said. Luckily, his sister was able to open the door using Tesla’s mobile app.
So far, dozens of Tesla owners are known to have filed complaints with US federal regulators about the sudden shutdown of their electric vehicles. In response, regulators are recommending that drivers study the emergency mechanisms of their EVs. Tesla has not yet commented on the situation, so many drivers may find out about the problem too late.
