Tesla, Elbil | – Tesla driver slept behind the wheel at 150 km / h

– I have never seen anything like it, say the police who discovered the sleeping raw driver.

Police in Canada have charged a man in his 20s with speeding and reckless driving, after he was discovered sleeping behind the wheel of a Tesla on the highway.

The incident happened on July 9 in the Canadian province of Alberta.

Police responded to a tip from the public about a Tesla that was driving on the highway.

– The car was apparently self-driving at a speed of 140 kilometers per hour, and the car seat backs in front were leaning all the way back. Both who were in the car appeared to be asleep, the police in Alberta write in one press release Thursday.

– After the police turned on the blue light on the vehicle, the Tesla automatically began to accelerate. The police took radar control of the vehicle, which confirmed that it had accelerated up to exactly 150 kilometers per hour, the press release reads.

The general speed limit on highways in Alberta is between 100 and 110 kilometers per hour.

– Non-self-propelled systems

Alberta police are now warning against so-called self-driving cars.

“Although manufacturers of new cars have built-in safety mechanisms to prevent drivers from abusing new safety systems in cars, those systems are just that – an additional safety system,” said Royal Inspector Gary Graham of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Alberta. statement.

– These are not self-driving systems. It still comes with a responsibility to actually drive the car, says Graham.

– I am speechless

Police who discovered the self-driving car, which was a 2019 Tesla Model S, say he is speechless.

“No one looked out of the windshield to see where the car was driving,” police officer Darrin Turnbull told CBS News.

– I have been in the police for 23 years, mainly in traffic service. I’m speechless. I have never seen anything like it, but of course this technology has not been available before, he says.

The trial is set to begin in December.

Autopilot

Tesla has been the company that has been at the forefront of rolling out self-driving technology in its cars, and they even call their system Autopilot.

As long as the car is on the motorway, the car itself can both control itself and adjust speed, and even change lanes, but in recent years several mechanisms have been built in for the driver to actively tell the car that it is holding the hand on the steering wheel.
