Speaking at a Tesla artificial intelligence event, the billionaire entrepreneur said that the robot, which has a height of about 1.65 m, will be able to do activities from mounting screws to cars to picking up food from stores.
The robot would have “profound implications for the economy,” Musk said, referring to the lack of labor. He said it was important that the robot not be “super expensive.”
The artificial intelligence event took place amid increased control over the safety and capability of Tesla’s advanced “full self-driving” assistance system.
Musk did not comment on checks on the safety of Tesla technology, but said he was confident he would get more security for the full self-driving system than people who use the car’s current cameras and computers.
U.S. security regulators opened an investigation into Tesla’s driver assistance system earlier this week over accidents involving Tesla cars hitting police cars and fire trucks.
Two US senators have also called on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Tesla’s claims to its “full self-driving” system.
