U.S. electric car maker Tesla Motors in the United States is recalling more than half a million cars in connection with the Boombox feature, which could affect pedestrian alerts, making the company its fourth recall in two weeks.
The US authorities have set specific standards for pedestrian alarms from electric and hybrid cars, as this type of vehicle is quieter than cars with internal combustion engines.
However, Tesla’s Boombox feature, introduced in late 2020, which allows personalized sounds such as music to be played through an outdoor speaker when the car is parked or in motion, could interfere with this warning, according to the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The Board explains that this may increase the risk of accidents.
NHTSA reports that the recall covers about 578,600 cars, but Tesla plans to address the issue with a remote software update.
This is the fourth recall of Tesla cars in the US in recent weeks.
The NHTSA announced on February 1 that Tesla is recalling nearly 54,000 cars in the country to deactivate the driver assistance system, which allows cars to cross an intersection without stopping the vehicle completely.
Two days later, the recall of 817,143 cars was announced to make adjustments to the seat belt warning system, which may not work in some circumstances.
Meanwhile, NHTSA said on Wednesday that Tesla is recalling 26,681 cars to correct a software bug in the heat pump valve that could affect the ability to defrost the windshield.
