Tesco’s Double Pricing Strategy and How Customers Can Save Thousands

There are some indications that prices in Czech retail chains have hit their ceiling. In the end, no interventions by the authorities, which were more in the eye anyway, nor appeals from the highest-ranking officials, helped, but rather a simple drop in demand from the customers themselves.

A decent offer

They increasingly looked for all kinds of alternatives, whether in the country or abroad, and finally they found them. Thus, retail sales in Czech stores have been falling for more than a year straight. It is quite possible that the situation will start to turn for the better.

One thing is the reduced value added tax, which will only be reflected in small percentages and amounts, the other is the effort of some chains to attract more customers. For example, Lidl has already announced that it will double the discount caused by the VAT reduction for a number of products.

However, the winner in this regard is Tesco, where you can save a really significant amount. But surprisingly, a lot of people don’t use it. If you learn this, you don’t have to pay nearly as much for goods as others. “I don’t really understand why people go to Poland. I can buy here even cheaper than them without having to trudge somewhere,” says Mr. Michal from Brno.

It alludes to the double pricing in Tesco, which has been in place for some time, but the difference is becoming more pronounced. Today, it is calculated that if you shop with a club card, you will save around 30% over the regular prices that are actually charged as standard.

You will lose thousands of crowns at once

The difference always surprises me. I go here for big shopping. I bought this for 4000 CZK and the receipt said that thanks to the Clubcard I saved 1350 crowns,” says Michal. It always comes out like this for a third.

However, he does not understand that some customers are not able to set up a card, or rather take it from the saleswoman, when it is possible to save so much. “A family was shopping ahead of me. It was worth about five thousand, but when the saleswoman asked if they had a card, they said no and that they were not interested in it. At that moment, they burned through at least 1500 CZK,” wonders the customer.

However, some don’t quite understand Tesco’s approach and would like it to charge reduced prices to everyone. This is how they divide customers into two categories, in addition, cheaper prices are redeemed by handing over personal data about purchasing behavior, which can then be used.
