Terzic becomes clear after a mistake

The personnel concerns at Borussia Dortmund are clearly noticeable against 1. FC Heidenheim. Memories of the first leg come back – head coach Edin Terzic speaks out.

Borussia Dortmund has a new fearsome opponent! As in the first half of the season, BVB did not get beyond a draw against Heidenheim. In the 0-0 draw at the Voith Arena, Edin Terzic’s team lacked penetration and precision on offense. After the game, the coach had clear words.

The supposed goal from Donyell Malen (26th) caused confusion. The Heidenheimers were of the opinion that there had been a foul play. Ultimately, however, referee Bastian Dankert overturned the goal due to an offside position.

Terzic: “We didn’t play a good game”

Niclas Füllkrug admitted to DAZN after the game: “That wasn’t enough. We wanted the three points and we’re not happy with that.” But Heidenheim is a “disgusting opponent” and after winning three games in a row, they shouldn’t “hang the whole thing too high,” said the goalscorer.

The head coach himself was more critical than his star striker. “We didn’t play a good game – no penetration, no force, hardly any chances to score. We had big problems today, including with the space. But we were unfocused and didn’t finish the situations properly. We aim to show better football. No excuses!”

Young national player celebrates his Bundesliga debut

By winning points, Dortmund secured fourth place in the table, but failed to overtake VfB Stuttgart. Heidenheim is currently in ninth place with 24 points. FCH coach Frank Schmidt was largely satisfied after the game: “We mustn’t forget, it’s still Borussia Dortmund. That was just our 20th Bundesliga game, it is an important point – in the fight and staying in the league.”

Terzic had warned his team of a “difficult” task – and again had to do without numerous players. As against Bochum, Gregor Kobel, Julian Brandt and Marco Reus were missing from the Dortmund squad, and Jadon Sancho was also out due to muscular problems.

BVB’s personnel shortage became noticeable when Terzic made a triple substitution in the 59th minute. Young national player Ole Pohlmann – who actually plays for Borussia’s second team – made his Bundesliga debut. He came on as a substitute for Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. Marius Wolf also came on the pitch (replacing Thomas Meunier) and Emre Can made his comeback after a knee injury (substituting for Salih Özcan).

Dortmund for the first time without scoring their own goal

The Dortmund offensive in particular was unable to match the performances from previous weeks on Friday evening. After ten goals in the last three games, BVB remained without a goal of their own – for the first time in the current Bundesliga season.

As usual, Heidenheim appeared brave and aggressive, stood securely at the back – and almost took the lead after a bad mistake by Özcan: Tim Kleindienst got the ball in the Dortmund penalty area, but shot past the half-empty goal (14th).

A wake-up call for BVB? Not at all. The runner-up allowed Heidenheim to advance to their own penalty area, sometimes without resistance. But the newcomer also lacked the precision to ultimately score the decisive goal.
