- sorae – Tarzan 12, a globular star cluster in the constellation Sagittarius photographed with the Hubble Space Telescope
This was introduced by sorae in an article on September 11, 2023.“Terzan 12” photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope“is.
Terzan 12 is a globular star cluster located approximately 15,000 light years away in the constellation Sagittarius. A globular cluster is a celestial body in which tens of thousands to millions of stars are gathered together in a spherical shape. Approximately 150 globular clusters have been discovered so far in the Milky Way. It is a celestial body where you can feel the beauty of the way the stars shine in close clusters.
Most globular clusters orbit the halo that surrounds the disk structure of the Milky Way, but some globular clusters also pass through the disk. The galactic disk contains gas containing a lot of dust that easily absorbs and scatters short-wavelength visible light, so celestial objects distributed along the Milky Way (the view of the galactic disk from inside) appear redder than they actually are. It is said that the color may appear to be a different color. This phenomenon is called interstellar reddening.
Terzan 12 is one of the globular clusters affected by reddening, but by comparing images taken by Hubble Space Telescope’s ACS and WFC3 with images taken in the past, researchers are able to determine the effects of gas and dust. This means that we were able to avoid it.
