AUCKLAND – A knife-wielding man stabbed six people at a mall in the city of Auckland, New Zealand (New Zealand), Friday (3/9/2021). That man, whose action was declared an attack terrorist , was eventually shot dead by police.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the man, who had long been watched over by several government agencies, was killed within 60 seconds of the attack starting. Ardern added that the perpetrator had been inspired by the ISIS armed group.

“It’s hateful, it’s wrong. It was perpetrated by an individual, not a faith,” Ardern said, describing the attacker as a Sri Lankan national who arrived in New Zealand in 2011.

“He himself is responsible for this action,” he added.

Ardern said she was limited in what she could say publicly about the man, who has been under surveillance since 2016, because he was the subject of a court action order.

Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said authorities believed the man acted alone and there was no further danger to the public.

A video in-posting on social media showed shoppers returning to work at the New Lynn mall shortly after the assailants struck.

“There’s someone here with a knife…he has a knife,” a woman says in the video. “Someone got stabbed,” he said again.
